Classroom

A new article from Chalkbeat Detroit looks into the push to pass bipartisan dyslexia legislation to help students in the classroom.

In Michigan, many students with dyslexia lack the support they need to be successful in the classroom. Because of this, a bipartisan group of lawmakers worked to support a package of bills to aid students with dyslexia. This legislation includes important interventions such as requiring districts to screen all K-3 students for dyslexia, requiring specialized instruction for children with signs of dyslexia, mandating training on dyslexia education for teachers who work with young readers, and requiring teacher preparatory programs for instruction specific to dyslexia.

Unfortunately, this legislation has yet to be implemented into law. However, many advocates believe it is possible to pass a reconfigured legislation due to bipartisan support. Many suggest attaching the dyslexia bills to third-grade reading reforms to help them move more quickly through the legislative process.
