In his interview titled “The Education Gap”, Reid Lyon, former Chief of the Child Development and Behavior branch of the National Institute of Child and Human Development, discusses the importance of bridging the gap between what we know about reading development in young children, and what we can do to facilitate it in struggling readers. According to Lyon, “Reading is the lifeblood of how people learn, how they engage with the world, and how they understand what’s important in life.” Therefore, bridging the educational gap will not only impact a struggling reader’s success in school, but also his or her general well-being, perceived intelligence, and ability to make a meaningful contribution to society. To hear Lyon’s recommendations on how reading should be taught, and how he believes we can drastically reduce the number of struggling readers in our educational system.
