Edutopia, a site from the George Lucas Educational Foundation, is dedicated to improving the K-12 learning process by documenting, disseminating, and advocating innovative strategies that will prepare students to thrive.

Pursuant to this goal, Edutopia has introduced project-based learning, a dynamic approach to teaching in which students explore real-world challenges while working in small groups.

It is said to be a very hands-on, engaging approach to learning that inspires students to obtain deeper knowledge of the subjects they’re studying.

Additionally, research has shown that retention of knowledge is stronger under a project-based learning system than a more traditional textbook-centered learning.

The project-based learning method is beneficial for students because it helps them develop confidence and self-direction as they work through team-based and independent work. It also helps develop their organizational and research skills, while simultaneously honing their communication skills.

Project-based learning is evaluated based on projects rather than exams or a written report, which helps students who tend to struggle with these more traditional evaluations get more meaningful feedback. This helps students see how their learning is meaningful and connects to the real world.
