Two-time Canadian national medalist Piper Gilles has faced more than the competition throughout her life. Growing up, she struggled with living with dyslexia.

She didn't let her language-learning disability affect her career goals though, and successfully pursued a degree from Ryerson University before taking on the life as a competitive figure skater. Gilles says that her strength and perseverance in her figure skating career grew out of her perseverance through school while living with dyslexia.

Now that she's conquered competitive ice skating, Piper Gilles plans to tackle dyslexia awareness and education. She recently assumed the role of spokesperson for the Ontario Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (ONBIDA), hoping to share her trials and tribulations concerning dyslexia as well as inspire others who struggle with dyslexia. Having faced the challenges of dyslexia herself, Gilles wants to increase awareness of dyslexia in an effort to help the ONBIDA’s efforts in spreading knowledge and education to a broader audience.
