Sam Allardyce, former soccer player and current manager of the soccer club Sunderland in England, failed his high school exams in 11th grade. Undiagnosed at the time, the young Allardyce learned to focus on what he was good at and not beat himself up over what the school system told him he was bad at. As the manager of a professional soccer team, Allardyce calls himself “a teacher” in spite of his own experiences with schooling as a student. In an article with The Telegraph, Allardyce reflects upon his time spent struggling in school because of his dyslexia, and comments on how now he values the different ways people learn, “whether through listening, watching, participating, or reading.”
