A step-by-step approach to dyslexia
“Try to remember that being unsuccessful in school doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be unsuccessful in life. Lots of people who didn’t excel in school still went on to have successful lives.”
—Dav Pilkey, dyslexic and author of the “Captain Underpants” series
As you are probably most aware, a large number of intelligent and talented men and women, through no fault of their own, experienced difficulty learning to read and write. This is known as dyslexia. Given its complexity, dyslexia can feel overwhelming and frustrating.
At this website, our goal is to give you a step-by-step approach to help you understand what dyslexia is (and what it is not), develop an action plan, begin to get help, and become your own best advocate.
We understand that it can be challenging. Therefore, we provide you with guidance, guidelines, tools such as an extensive glossary to help you understand all of the terms, assistive software programs and apps, and study ‘tips’ that focus on organization and time management.
Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) previously known under diagnoses such as specific language impairment (SLI), receptive-expressive language disorder, or simply language disorder, the term DLD was adopted in 2017. DLD is neurological in origin, affects both children and adults, and is lifelong. Individuals with DLD have trouble with speaking and understanding spoken language. Language intervention can help mitigate negative outcomes for individuals with DLD. DLD is very common with approximately two students in every classroom having it. It is a risk factor for developing a learning disability, and therefore, students with DLD can also have difficulties in reading and writing.
Here are some videos to learn more and hear stories from people with DLD.
There are also many success stories on this site that are very motivating and inspirational. Let’s begin your journey.
