Number 2: Advocate early. It is very important that you meet with your instructors at the beginning of the semester and let them know that you have a learning disability and what accommodations you will need.
If you wait till you’re struggling in the class, your teacher might see this as an excuse or a manipulation. This demands that you understand your learning style and what accommodations you will need.
This can be difficult for most people. We have only learned the way we learn. So, it is difficult to see how this is different from typical learners. Most of us need a recent and comprehensive diagnostic evaluation.
Furthermore, you are old enough to spend a session with the psychologist learning about your unique learning style. This also allows you to have recent documentation when you meet with your instructor.
Finally, if your instructor is uncooperative consider talking to your counselor or switching classes. Not everyone will understand about learning disabilities.
