Poet and teacher shares his struggle with dyslexia

In an interview with PBS, Philip shares his experience growing up with dyslexia. He describes not being able to read until the age of 11 and that he was held back in third grade. Additionally, he details being bullied for his struggles with reading and writing. Philip describes being humiliated when placed in a class of only three other students who were all considered “slow” where not even his teachers believed he could be successful

Along with his struggles also came the hope of becoming a writer. Philip considered becoming a writer from the age of 16. Although his reading and writing journey was difficult, he continued to work hard and use his creativity and even won a poetry prize during his time at school. Receiving the award led him to make peace with his situation and pursue writing as a career.

Philip has written and published multiple books since then including one specifically regarding his dyslexia titled My Dyslexia. [2]
