Study compares approaches to improving reading performance.
Under a bill passed during the final day of its 2017 session, Virginia school districts would be required to have reading specialists trained in helping students with dyslexia.
Every classroom has students who find learning a little more challenging than others. But for some, the struggle extends beyond the basic comprehension of what’s being taught. Students coping with dyslexia may find simple memorization or reading out loud to be difficult, or even impossible.
Parents are usually right about their kids. If yours is not achieving in school, RTI is not the only answer.
DyslexiaHelp’s own Dr. Joanne Pierson will be speaking on Friday, October 28 from 10:30–11:30 am on "The Importance of Oral Language Skills in Reading Comprehension: Making Sure the Intervention is Driven by a Good Assessment" with Dr. Lauren Katz and Dr. Karen Fallon.
Foreign Language Study Tips
By Kevin Olson
We reached out to Spanish teacher Kevin Olson for some advice about learning a foreign language. Here are his foreign language study tips (some of which can be helpful when studying in general).
Summer is in full swing around the country and for many of us that means it is time for our "summer reading." We’ve a bit more time to sit and relax with a good book. But, as those of us who live and work with dyslexics know, this may not be their idea of a good time.
It can be a real dilemma for you to balance your child’s summer fun and respite with continued dyslexia tutoring or therapy. You feel somewhere between a seal balancing that ball and a juggler keeping all those balls in the air!
I am in need of help. My child is in 6th grade reading at a 1.3 reading level. I have been told by several of her teachers that they feel like she has dementia when it comes to spelling and word recognition. They have told me with some of her memory issues that she may never read. I need help advocating for her.
My child is in first grade this year and he has begun to have problems reversing his 6s and 9s and 2s and 5s as well as some letters. He has some behavioral and work avoidance problems as well and the school and his mother and I suspect he might have dyslexia. Can you recommend someone who can evaluate him?
