Why a New Definition for Dyslexia is Needed
New research out of the University of Birmingham in the UK suggests that the definition of dyslexia needs to be updated to better describe it. This update to the definition of dyslexia should help people with dyslexia receive the specific support that they need. The definition of dyslexia in the UK has not been updated in more than 15 years with it last being updated in 2009 with the Rose Review. The Rose Review was never universally adopted and in the past 15 years has gathered a lot of criticism.
In England and Wales there is no clear pathway to getting a dyslexia diagnosis and to receiving help for your dyslexia. Julia Carroll, professor of Psychology in Education at the University of Birmingham who led the study, believes that adopting a universal definition is the first step to improving the support for children with dyslexia. To get this new definition the researchers brought together 58 specialists including psychologists, teachers and people with dyslexia to work on creating the new definition of dyslexia. A similar effort to revise the current definition of dyslexia is occurring in the US.
