Smiling female college student in classroom

Your first year at college can be challenging whether you are dyslexic or not. Use these six tips to prepare for your first semester and get your college career off to a positive start!

  1. Plan to attend the earliest orientation that your school has. That way you can have the best shot at registering for the classes you need.
  2. Choose courses that have fewer students in them so you can have a better chance at individual attention.
  3. Register for the minimum number of credit hours to be a full-time student. In the case of UM, that’s 12.
  4. Ask for a housing assignment on the main campus near your classes to help with time management.
  5. Check into tutors and other assistive options.
  6. Before you purchase a computer, check with your university as to whether a PC or a MAC would be most compatible with software programs, etc.
