Take a closer look at two common conditions that are easy to confuse.
AD/HD and Dyslexia can look similar, cause similar problems, and even appear in the same person. Both are prevalent, and it’s estimated that 30% of Dyslexia sufferers also have AD/HD. However, these conditions are different and require separate diagnoses and interventions to be managed successfully. In the case of reading, someone with AD/HD may have difficulty focusing on the book itself, while someone with Dyslexia may have excellent focus but poor word decoding causing their struggle. Even though the end result is the same difficulty reading, the treatment for each case would be quite different. The International Dyslexia Association has produced a helpful fact sheet in both English and Spanish that delves deeper into the intersection of AD/HD and Dyslexia.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) and Dyslexia provides a brief overview of each condition, as well as examining the areas where they overlap.
